Full description
In that square, you will be entertained during the visit by your guide who will describe all the immense artistic wealth in Santa Croce: Gaddi frescoes (1380) in the Cappella Maggiore telling the story of Santa Croce; Giotto frescoes in the Bardi and Peruzzi Chapels showing scenes from the lives of St. Francis and St. John the Evangelist; as Donatello did his crucifix— one of the greatest treasures of renaissance— or Brunelleschi and the perfect harmony of his architecture in the Chapel of Fools. The flood that damaged several paintings from 1966 and destroyed the monumental cemetery at a later date restored is also part of this tour's history. After visiting the Interior, your guide will take you around the Exterior, with its polychrome marble facade. Then on to the Bell Tower, Crypt, and 16 Chapels. The tour lasts an hour; after that, you're free to revisit any of the sites on your own. In the afternoon meet in front of the Hard Rock Cafe for the walking tour. Start your visit in the best possible way: by getting to know the history of this Renaissance city. Find out how one extraordinary social movement made Florence—and later, Europe—what they are now. We'll start at Piazza Della Republica and then head straight to Piazza Della Duomo. We'll pass Duomo Square as we walk toward Palazzo Vecchio—other historical landmarks of Florence will be pointed out by your guide. Palazzo Vecchio houses Michelangelo's David. Walk past Palazzo Vecchio while your guide fills you in on the Uffizi Gallery ( one of the grandest museums anywhere on earth) until you reach Ponte Vecchio, the most famous old bridge in Florence. Then, on the way to Palazzo Pitti— a huge palace and the biggest architectural monument in Florence by Filippo Brunelleschi— through narrow streets and many hidden treasures in this city, your guide will tell you all about its curious secrets.
